God doesn't need our prayers to be long, complicated or to use fancy words, he wants us to come just as we are, and to tell him what we are thinking about and what we are feeling. What things would you like to talk to God about?
What do you like to talk to your best friends about? How often do you spend time together?
Have you ever thought about spending time with God and talking to Him about any of these things?
What do you think He would say?
One of the best things about good friends is that they are always there for us when we need them. They listen to what we have to say, and help us to find the best way forward. God is always there for us too, and he loves it when we take time out to talk to him. But he is far better than a best friend, so much better in fact, that he already knows what we need, even before we ask for it!
Despite this, sometimes the idea of praying to God can still seem too difficult or too time consuming. It can be easy to forget to spend time with God or to be distracted by things in the world around us. I once heard of a person who found it so difficult to have uninterrupted time with God that they used to wake up in the middle of the night to do it!
Jesus said this to his disciples when he was teaching them how to pray:
When you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. “When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!
Matthew 6: 6-8
Find a place in your house where you can be quiet and spend time with God away from distractions. Maybe it is on your bedroom floor, your favourite seat in the lounge or a sunny spot in the garden, or in the bath. Try and go to that place 5 times this week and each time talk to God about something important to you.
Dear God, thank you that I can always come and talk to you about anything that is on my mind. Thank you that you listen and that you always know what I am going to say, even before I say it. Amen
